Reliance Industries to Build India’s Largest Data Centre Cluster in Andhra Pradesh: Major Boost for India’s Digital Future

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, is set to establish India’s largest data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, marking one of the biggest investments in the country’s digital infrastructure sector. The proposed mega project is expected to strengthen India’s position in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and data storage services.

₹1.6 Lakh Crore Investment in Andhra Pradesh

According to reports, Reliance Industries plans to invest around ₹1.6 lakh crore (over $17 billion) in this ambitious project. The facility will be developed in phases and will include a 1.5-gigawatt (GW) AI-focused data centre cluster, making it the largest in India.

This massive investment reflects Reliance’s growing focus on digital technology, AI infrastructure, and next-generation computing capabilities.

Why Visakhapatnam Was Chosen

Visakhapatnam is emerging as a strategic technology hub due to its coastal location, access to undersea cable connectivity, land availability, and government support. Andhra Pradesh is actively promoting the state as a destination for global data centre investments.

The region is already attracting global tech giants, including Google, which is also building a large AI data centre in the same area.

Green Energy Powered Infrastructure

A key highlight of the Reliance data centre cluster is its captive solar power and battery storage system. This renewable energy integration will help reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources and make the facility more sustainable.

As data centres consume enormous power, renewable energy solutions are becoming essential worldwide.

Project Timeline and Development Phases

Reports suggest that the first phase of the project may include a 500 MW facility targeted for operations by October 2028. The remaining phases are expected to be completed gradually, with the full cluster becoming operational by 2030.

Impact on Jobs and Economy

This mega investment is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in:

  • IT services
  • Data management
  • Cloud operations
  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Renewable energy
  • Security and facility management

It is also likely to boost local businesses, real estate demand, and startup ecosystems in Andhra Pradesh.

Why This Matters for India

The rise of AI, digital payments, OTT platforms, and cloud-based businesses has sharply increased demand for secure data storage. Large-scale data centres are now critical national infrastructure.

Reliance’s new project can help India:

  • Reduce dependence on overseas data centres
  • Improve internet speed and cloud services
  • Support AI development
  • Strengthen digital sovereignty
  • Attract more foreign investment

The Reliance Industries data centre project in Andhra Pradesh is more than just an infrastructure investment—it is a strategic move that could transform India into a global digital powerhouse. With massive scale, renewable energy backing, and AI-readiness, this project may redefine the future of technology in India.
